Take for example, Sirius VS HD...you can get, in my area, 95.5, the local hiphop station in "HD" but nothing you really wanna listen to. When you pay monthly for Sirius, you get shit that you can listen to in ANY mood you could be in. Like, if YOU got into his car, you could pick absolutely ANYTHING your hear desires to hear. A paid subscription to either sirius or xm will ALWAYS be better, not because it's cooler, but because of the content you recieve. He (and you lol) will be much happier with a paid sattelite subscription, than free "whatever they give you" HD radio. There just aren't that many HD stations out there, and the one's i've heard just aren't really any better than the one's i've already listened to. hope that cleared things up.
